Henning Mørland (1903-1989), classical philologist and translator. Mørland completed his doctoral dissertation in 1932 on the Latin translations of the Greek physician Oribasius. After periods of study in Germany, France, and Sweden, where he attended seminars on Late Latin under Einar Löfstedt, he served as Professor of Classical Philology at the University of Oslo (1949-1973). His scholarly interests included Latin prose and poetry, particularly Virgil. Alongside his academic work, Mørland was a prolific translator of Greek and Latin literature into Norwegian, producing nineteen volumes of translations, including works by Plato, Apuleius, Cicero, Tacitus, Herodotus, Xenophon, and Thucydides. Mørland was elected to the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters (1943), the Royal Society of the Humanities at Uppsala (1964), and the Norwegian Academy (1973). SNL
