William Henry Denham Rouse (1863-1950), classical scholar and educational reformer. Rouse was educated at Haverfordwest Grammar School, Doveton College in Calcutta, Regent's Park College, and Christ's College, Cambridge. He became headmaster of the Perse School, Cambridge, in 1902, a post he held until 1928. He is known for introducing progressive reforms in classical education, applying a direct-method approach to the teaching of Latin and Greek, inspired by contemporary innovations in modern language instruction. He also collaborated with R. S. Conway and Peter Giles on translations of Karl Brugmann's Indo-European Grammar, and produced translations and editions of Sanskrit, Pali, and Greek texts, including The Jataka, Greek tragedy, Plato, Pindar, and Nonnus. Rouse was editor of the Loeb Classical Library from its foundation in 1911 and co-edited Classical Review (1911-1920). ODNB
