Sergei Aleksandrovich Zhebelev (1867-1941), classical philologist, epigrapher, and archaeologist. Zhebelev graduated from the historical‑philological faculty of St Petersburg University in 1890. He taught Greek language and classical literature, becoming a Professor at St Petersburg (later Leningrad) State University from 1904 to 1927, where he also held administrative roles including dean and, for a period, rector. He was elected a corresponding member and then a full member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in 1927. His published output encompassed monographs, archaeological studies, translations of classical authors (including Aristotle, Plato, and Appian).

Two volumes. Translation from Mishchenko 1887-1888, revised and annotated by Zhebelev. It was reprinted in 1999 with revisions, a new introduction by Trokhachev and a foreword by Frolov – see Frolov 1999.
