Charles Bigg (1840-1908), classical scholar, schoolmaster, and ecclesiastical historian. Educated at Manchester Grammar School and Corpus Christi College, Oxford, Bigg was ordained in 1864, serving as second classical master at Cheltenham College and later as principal of Brighton College (1871-1881). After resigning from Brighton College, Bigg returned to Oxford as chaplain of Corpus Christi College, where he developed a sustained scholarly interest in early Christianity. Bigg published studies and editions of early Christian texts, including commentaries on The Epistles of St Peter and St Jude (1901), and editions of devotional classics such as Augustine's Confessions.
