Daniel Albert Wyttenbach (1746-1820), classical scholar and philologist. Wyttenbach studied classical languages and philosophy at Marburg, Göttingen, where he attended the courses of Christian Gottlob Heyne, and Leiden, where he studied under David Ruhnken. He subsequently taught at the Remonstrant Seminary and at the Athenaeum Illustre in Amsterdam. In 1799 he was appointed Professor of ancient languages and history at the University of Leiden and librarian of the university, a position he held until 1818, succeeding Ruhnken. During his career he edited several classical texts, including the Moralia of Plutarch, and published a wide range of philological studies on Greek literature. Wyttenbach was a member of several learned societies, including the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres. DHS
