Oleksandr Ivanovyč Biletskyi (1884-1961), literary scholar, critic, and academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR and the USSR. Biletskyi studied at Kharkiv University, graduating in 1907 in history and philology. He later became a lecturer and, from 1912, privat-docent at Kharkiv University. In 1918 he defended his master’s dissertation on 19th-century Russian literature. After the 1917 Revolution, he worked in cultural and educational institutions, including the People’s Commissariat for Education. From 1939 until his death in 1961, he headed the Shevchenko Institute of Literature in Kyiv and taught at Kyiv University. His work focused on literary theory, poetics, and the study of Ukrainian and Russian classical authors such as Shevchenko, Franko, Lesya Ukrainka, and others. He also served as editor and compiler of major literary anthologies, including collections of classical texts used in education, which sometimes included translated excerpts from ancient Greek authors such as Thucydides.
