Leonas Valkūnas (1914-1990), translator, literary scholar, and classical philologist. Valkūnas obtained a degree in classical philology from Vytautas Magnus University in 1938 and a doctoral-level qualification in the humanities (candidate of philological sciences, 1958). He worked as a schoolteacher and later taught at Vilnius University from 1945 onward. He served as head of the Department of Classical Philology from 1960 to 1976 and became associate professor in 1969. Valkūnas translated a wide range of works from Latin and Greek into Lithuanian, including Longus' Daphnis and Chloe, Chariton's Chaereas and Callirhoe, Heliodorus' Aethiopica, Aesop's Fables, Thomas More's Utopia, and historical works such as Peter of Dusburg's Chronicle of the Prussian Land and Albertas Kojalavičius-Vijūkas’ History of Lithuania. He also translated and edited philosophical and philological texts by authors such as Abelard, Bacon, Dante, Scaliger, and Ockham. In addition to his translation work, he co-authored a Latin textbook (Vox Latina, 1973; revised 1985) and co-edited an anthology of Greek literature for higher education (1958, revised 1963), along with other teaching materials in classical studies.
