Reissue of Kury 1982, with a new preface by Helio Jaguaribe. Hélio Jaguaribe de Mattos (1923-2018), political scientist, sociologist, lawyer, and writer. He graduated in Law from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro in 1946. In the early 1950s, he helped found the Instituto Brasileiro de Economia, Sociologia e Política (IBESP) and later the Instituto Superior de Estudos Brasileiros (ISEB). During the military dictatorship beginning in 1964, he left Brazil and taught at several U.S. universities, including Harvard (1964‑1966), Stanford (1966‑1967), and MIT (1968‑1969). He returned to Brazil in 1969. Jaguaribe's work focused on Brazil's development, political and social structures in Latin America, nationalism, and dependency theory.
