José Manuel Pabón (1892-1978), classical philologist. Pabón obtained his doctorate in Philosophy and Letters from the Universidad Central Madrid in 1926 and was appointed Chair of Latin Language and Literature at the University of Salamanca in 1928. He later held the same chair at the University of Granada, and collaborated with Ramón Menéndez Pidal at the Centro de Estudios Históricos to promote classical studies in Spain. In this context, he helped found the journal Emérita, to which he contributed for many years. Following the Spanish Civil War, he was appointed provisional Chair of Greek Language at the University of Madrid (1939). He was also a founding member of the Instituto de Filología Antonio de Nebrija and served as its deputy director from 1940. From 1954 to 1962 he held the Chair of Latin Language at the University of Madrid. Moreover, Pabón authored the Diccionario manual griego‑español (1967), a reference work widely used in Spanish secondary education. Historia Hispánica
