Richard Winn Livingstone (1880-1960), classical scholar and university administrator. Livingstone studied at Winchester College and New College, Oxford. He was fellow and tutor, and later librarian and president of Corpus Christi College, Oxford. Livingstone published works on classical education and Greek thought, translated Plato and Thucydides, and initiated the Clarendon Greek and Latin Series. He held presidencies of the Hellenic Society (1938) and the Classical Association (1940-1941) and lectured widely, particularly in the United States. He was knighted in 1931, and awarded several international distinctions, including the King Haakon VII Liberty Cross and the Légion d’honneur. ODNB

Revision of Crawley's 1874 translation. A partial translation of the History: sometimes Livingstone omits or summarizes portions of the text, and at times he comments on Thucydides' words, interweaving his own observations within the narrative. He distinguishes his own words from those of Thucydides by using italics.

In the preface Livingstone notes that he himself translated Thuc. 3.82-84 (The Stasis at Corcyra) and 5.84-116 (The Melian Dialogue), and that he used Zimmern's translation of Thuc. 2.34-46 (Pericles' Funeral Oration).
