Translation and commentary on the Battle of Sphacteria described by Thucydides in Book 4.

Introduction by Sergio Valzania, with an essay by Luciano Canfora. Sergio Valzania (1951-), journalist, television author, and historian. Valzania taught Communication Science at the Universities of Genoa and Siena. From 1999 to 2009, he directed programming at Rai Radio 2 and Rai Radio 3, and from 2011 he held the position of Deputy Director at Radio Rai. Valzania's work spans multiple media formats. He produced television programs, and radio series. As an author, he has published both historical essays and novels, and has written for several Italian newspapers and magazines. 

Luciano Canfora (1942-), classical philologist and historian, Emeritus Professor of Classical Philology at the University of Bari. Canfora studied Classical Philology at the University of Bari, where he later became professor of Greek and Latin Philology. His research spans textual criticism, historiography, ancient political institutions, and the transmission of classical texts. Canfora has published widely on authors such as Thucydides, Plato, and Cicero, and is the author of influential works on the history of democracy and the classical tradition. Alongside his academic output, he has maintained an active presence in Italian public discourse, contributing to debates on education, politics, and historical memory. He has served as editor of Quaderni di Storia. Moreover, he is a member of the Institute for the Classical Tradition in Boston, the Fondazione Istituto Gramsci in Rome, and the scientific committee of the Treccani Encyclopedia Institute. Treccani
