The book is divided into two main parts. The first (pp. 11-220) presents a reprint of Thucydides' speeches translated in Crawley 1874, each accompanied by an introductory note by Harding. The military harangues are grouped together in a distinct section. The second part (pp. 223-347) includes reprints of R. C. Jebb's 1880 essay The Speeches of Thucydides and John Finley's chapter Intellectual Background from his 1942 study Thucydides. This material is supplemented by a brief introduction, discussing especially the problem of translation (pp. 1-7), a chronological table, bibliography, five maps, and an index.
