Johann Classen (1805-1891), classical philologist and secondary school teacher. Classen studied at the Johanneum in Hamburg and later at the universities of Leipzig (under Gottfried Hermann) and Bonn, where he worked closely with Barthold Georg Niebuhr. He qualified as a lecturer in Bonn (1829) and Kiel (1831), later teaching in Berlin and becoming a professor at the Katharineum in Lübeck (1833). There, he developed close ties with scholars such as Jacob, Wattenbach, Ernst and Georg Curtius, and the poet Geibel, and began his studies in Greek linguistics. In 1853, he became director of the Gymnasium in Frankfurt am Main, which he reformed in opposition to rigid examination systems. From 1864 to 1874, he led the Johanneum in Hamburg. After retiring, he dedicated himself to his most significant work: a commentary on Thucydides. DB

Julius Steup (1847-1925), classical philologist and librarian. Steup studied Classical Philology at the Universities of Göttingen and Bonn, earning his doctorate in 1868 with a dissertation on Thucydides. After working as a secondary school teacher, he joined the University Library in Jena in 1870 and became director of the University Library in Freiburg in 1872, a position he held until 1912. He was also appointed honorary professor at the University of Freiburg. As a librarian, he modernized the library's catalogues and oversaw the construction of a new library building. As a philologist, he is best known for his scholarly edition of Thucydides, published in continuation of Johannes Classen's work. Additionally, it includes an afterword and bibliographical addenda by Rudolf Stark (1912-1966), classical philologist. Stark studied at the universities of Göttingen and Berlin, earning his doctorate in 1936 under Max Pohlenz and Ulrich Knoche. After working at the Thesaurus Linguae Latinae, he served in the German military during World War II. In 1949, he was appointed Associate Professor of Greek Language and Literature at the newly founded University of Saarland, where he was later promoted to Full Professor following his habilitation in Göttingen in 1955. His research covered a wide range of Greek and Latin literature, with a particular focus on ancient political thought. Though he planned a commentary on Aristotle's Politics, it remained unfinished. Several of his studies on politics and rhetoric were published posthumously by his pupil Peter Steinmetz. He also founded the series Palingenesia in 1964. DB
