Peter Elmsley (1774-1825), classical scholar. Elmsley was educated at Westminster School and Christ Church, Oxford. After inheriting a substantial fortune from his uncle – the bookseller Peter Elmsley – he withdrew from clerical duties to pursue classical studies. Elmsley focused primarily on Greek theater, publishing critical editions of Sophocles, Euripides, and Aristophanes. He played a significant role in early 19th-century classical philology, particularly through his methodical work with manuscripts in Italian libraries and his careful collations, many of which are preserved in the Bodleian Library. He was involved in the failed project to unroll the Herculaneum papyri alongside Humphry Davy and was later appointed Camden Professor of Ancient History and Principal of St Alban Hall at Oxford. He was elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1814.
