Pedro de Valencia (1555-1620), humanist. Educated in Latin and the liberal arts in Córdoba and later at the University of Salamanca, Pedro studied Greek under Francisco Sánchez de las Brozas and biblical Hermeneutics under Benito Arias Montano. Appointed Royal Chronicler to Philip III in 1607, he was also a teacher of rhetoric and humanities in Zafra. His major published work is the philosophical treatise Academica sive de iudicio erga verum (Antwerp, 1596), exploring epistemology in the Ciceronian and Academic tradition. He also produced translations from Greek into Latin – such as Theophrastus' De igne and Epiphanius' De lapidibus – and from Greek to Spanish, including works by Dio Chrysostom, Epictetus, and Demosthenes.
