Veit Winsheim, or Winsemius, (1501-1570), humanist, physician, and educator. Born as Veit Örtel, Winsheim studied at the University of Wittenberg, where he became a close pupil and collaborator of Philipp Melanchthon. Initially a teacher of rhetoric, he later held the Greek professorship at Wittenberg, eventually earning a doctorate in medicine in 1550 and teaching medicine thereafter. He maintained a lasting intellectual relationship with Melanchthon, who entrusted him with revising his Latin syntax. Winsheim translated several Greek authors into German, including Theocritus, Sophocles, and Demosthenes. He also delivered a commemorative funeral oration for Melanchthon, which remains a valuable source for the reformer's biography. DB

Winsheim included in his translation Philippus Melanchthon's translations of Thuc. 1.138.3 (Encomium of Themistocles), 3.82.2-85.3 (The Stasis at Corcyra), and thirty-four speeches (Books 1-4, 6, 7). The book was revised by the author himself and published posthumously in 1580 by Veit Winsheim's son, who was also named Veit Winsheim – see Winsheim 1580.
