Marco Antonio Coccio Sabellico (1436-1506), historian and humanist. Sabellico received his education in Rome and later taught in Verona and Udine. Active in the humanist circles of both Rome and the Veneto, he distinguished himself as a philologist and historian. In 1487, he was appointed official historian of the Republic of Venice, a position he held until his death. In this capacity, Sabellico composed the Historiae rerum venetarum ab urbe condita, a Latin chronicle of Venetian history from its legendary founding to his own time. Sabellico also authored erudite treatises, annotated editions of classical texts, and antiquarian and moral works, including the De Venetae urbis situ and the Enneades sive Rhapsodia historiarum. His writings reflect a strong classical orientation and a keen interest in the political and cultural structures of Venice, which he portrayed as a new Rome. Treccani

Two volumes. The work is a universal history that begins with the Creation and ends in 1504. In Enneades 3.5-8, Sabellico covers the Peloponnesian War, using Thucydides as his main source. Sabellico summarizes Thucydides' text but also includes in his account the Latin translation of eleven speeches (from Books 1, 3, and 5-7): Thuc. 1.32-36 (Speech of the Corcyraeans), 1.37-43 (Speech of the Corinthians), 3.42-48 (Speech of Diodotus), 3.53-59 (Speech of the Plataeans), 5.9 (Speech of Brasidas), 6.9-14 (Speech of Nicias), 6.16-18 (Speech of Alcibiades), 6.20-23 (Reply of Nicias), 6.76-80 (Speech of Hermocrates), 7.61-64 (Speech of Nicias), 7.66-68 (Speech of Gylippus).
