Richard Crawley (1840-1893), translator and writer. Crawley was educated at Marlborough College and later at University College, Oxford, where he graduated with first-class honours in classics. Elected a fellow of Worcester College, he published satirical and poetic works, but poor health limited his academic career. In 1879, he gave up writing and spent his later years in Switzerland and London. From 1875, he directed a life insurance company. ODBN

Reprint of Crawley 1874, with an introduction by John H. Finley, Jr (1904-1995), classical philologist and Professor of Greek literature at Harvard University, where he also served as Master of Eliot House. His scholarly work focused primarily on Thucydides, Euripides, Pindar, and Aeschylus.
