Henrik van Herwerden (1831-1910), classical philologist. Herwerden studied classical languages at Leiden University, earning his doctorate in 1855 with a dissertation on the fragments of Greek comic poets. After a period of research travel in Spain, France, and Italy, he taught at various Dutch gymnasiums before being appointed Professor of Greek language and literature at Utrecht University in 1864. Herwerden specialized in Greek philology and textual criticism. His publications include critical editions and studies on Thucydides, Sophocles, and Greek lexicography. He was elected a member of several scholarly academies, including the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Bavarian Academy of Sciences, and the Imperial Russian Academy of Sciences. He was made a Knight of the Order of the Netherlands Lion in 1886. DBLN

Five volumes. Greek text emended on the basis of the exegetical and critical emendations proposed by van Herwerden in his Studia Thucydidea – van Herwerden 1869 – and in other articles published in subsequent years in Hermes and Mnemosyne.
