Thucydides, edidit A. Manutius

Aldo Manuzio (ca. 1452-1515), humanist, scholar, and printer. Educated in Rome and Ferrara, Manuzio was deeply engaged in classical studies and became a central figure in the Renaissance revival of Greek and Latin literature. In 1494, he established in Venice his printing house, which gained fame for producing high-quality editions of ancient texts. He was the first to publish many Greek works in their original language, including those by Aristotle, Plato, Thucydides, and Herodotus. To ensure accuracy and philological rigor, he collaborated closely with prominent émigré Greek scholars such as Janus Lascaris, Markos Mousouros, and Demetrios Doukas, who helped edit and proofread the Greek texts. Manuzio also introduced significant technical innovations, such as the italic typeface and the octavo format, making books more portable and accessible. Through his Aldine editions, he played a vital role in preserving and disseminating classical knowledge, and he is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the history of printing and humanist scholarship.
