Jean-Baptiste Gail (1755-1829), classical scholar and translator, appointed deputy in 1791. From 1792, Gail served as Professor at the Collège de France. In 1815, King Louis XVIII appointed him Curator of Latin and Greek manuscripts in the Manuscripts Department of the Bibliothèque nationale de France. He was also a member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres and the Institut de France. In addition to his works on classical literature, he wrote several elementary educational texts.
