Johann Jakob Reiske (1716-1774), classical scholar, Arabist, and Byzantinist. Reiske studied theology at Leipzig from 1733, while pursuing Arabic studies largely autodidactically. Denied a doctorate in philology, he obtained instead a medical degree at Leiden in 1746 with a dissertation on Arabic medicine. After returning to Leipzig, he abandoned medical practice and devoted himself to philological work. In 1748 he was appointed associate professor of Arabic, though without stable financial support; subsequent attempts to secure chairs in classical philology were unsuccessful, partly owing to opposition from figures such as Johann August Ernesti. In 1758 he became rector of the Nikolaischule in Leipzig. Reiske is regarded as a foundational figure in the development of Arabic philology as an independent discipline, rather than an auxiliary to theology. His scholarly interests extended to Arabic literature, numismatics, and epigraphy, as well as to Greek and Byzantine studies. Among his principal works are the edition of the De ceremoniis aulae Byzantinae of Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus (1751-1754) and the edition and translation of the chronicle of Abu al-Fida (Annales moslemici, 1789-1794). He also published studies on Arabic proverbs and produced translations of Greek authors, including Demosthenes. DB
