Abstract

The diary of Lena Mukhina documents the siege of Leningrad by the German troops during the Second World War. The sixteen-year-old girl describes with astonishing precision the day-by-day descent into genocide by famine perpetrated by the Reich which resulted in the loss of life for more than one million people, in a city already destroyed by massive bombardments. The essay illustrates Mukhina’s writings, showing their historical relevance and literary value, while offering a reflection about the war-time closing in of space and time which makes travel either a dream or a forced removal.
