Abstract

This chapter offers a brief overview of contemporary animal ethics, its key concepts and approaches. We begin with arguments for extending moral consideration to animals, then examine utilitarian and Kantian views on what constitutes the good for animals and our moral duties toward them. Next, we explore less orthodox positions that emphasize political and interpersonal relations, as well as care. We conclude with emerging approaches that adopt an enactive perspective and highlight connections with environmental ethics.
