Aspetti stilistici e tecnici

Abstract

The restoration of Nicolò di Pietro’s frescoes (doc. 1394‑1427) in the apse of the church of Santi Maria e Donato in Murano (Venice) was carried out in 2022. It allowed an in-depth study of stylistic and technical aspects of this work of art, created by the painter in his mature years. Despite the poor state of conservation, the close-up view allowed us to recognize the high quality of the details painted by Nicolò (i.e. Evangelists’ faces), while a large part of the painted surface can be attributed to his workshop. Furthermore, the removal of the wooden choir made possible the discovery of some unknown fresco fragments in the lower sector of the apse. The restoration was also an opportunity to study past restorations of this decorative cycle and techniques of mural painting in fifteenth century Venice.
