1 • Who’s Indigenous Here? Disentangling ‘Mesolithic Prelude’

Abstract

This chapter addresses a common misconception: the assumption that local Mesolithic groups in southern Eastern Europe adopted a Neolithic way of life at the very onset of Neolithisation. The analysis reveals that certain ‘Mesolithic’ elements found in Neolithic material cultures may have actually been introduced to the region by early farmers. Conversely, some traits thought to represent Mesolithic heritage were already in use by early Mesolithic, rather than the latest, groups of hunter-gatherers.
