Chapter | Analisi preliminare delle espressioni idiomatiche in LIS
Abstract
The article is a preliminary study and analysis of idioms in Italian Sign Language (LIS), starting from the features described for idioms in spoken languages. Idiomatic expressions (i.e.) are defined as expressions composed of several lexical items whose meaning cannot be deduced from the set of meanings of its components. The article presents the main features of i.e. in LIS by investigating a LIS corpus of 12 informants. Preliminary data show that i.e. in LIS are expressions restricted in use and contexts and suitable for a purely informal and colloquial register that can be learnt by experienced signers. The research aims to provide an initial delineation of i.e. in LIS, paving the way for subsequent in-depth studies which we hope will further analyse this under-investigated area.
