La Barcelona (pan)hispanista del primer franquisme

Abstract

In early Francoism in Barcelona, the creation of the Instituto de Estudios Hispánicos de Barcelona in 1948, inaugurated by the Foreign Office Minister Alberto Martín-Artajo, was essential for a confluence of geopolitical and cultural interests. The scope of the institution went beyond establishing international links with Hispanic cultures, also in their linguistic and cultural diversity, granting the dominance and survival of literature in Spanish in Catalonia. The incorporation of Catalan and Portuguese coinciding in this political framework intend to define Hispanicity as a kind of dialectical unity aimed at consolidating its supremacy.
