abstract
This volume presents the posthumous French edition of the Livre de messire Marco Polo, established by Luigi Foscolo Benedetto (1886-1966) in the 1950s. This unpublished work followed Benedetto’s monumental 1928 edition, and the English and Italian translations provided in 1931 and 1932. Thanks to Ernest Giddey’s heirs, this critical edition ― prefaced by Benedetto himself ― can now finally come to light. The text is accompanied by four essays which offer an analysis of the history of Benedetto’s editions, and of the compositional architecture, language and style of his publishing enterprise. The volume is the first of a larger project which includes the publication of Benedetto’s own commentary to the Livre (voll. 2-4) and of a collection of essays on Marco Polo written by Benedetto between 1924 and 1960 (vol. 5).
