Research Article | Allusions to the Feast of the Choes in the Comic Banquet of Heracles (Alc. 747-767) and in the Tragic One of Orestes (IT 947-960)
Abstract
This essay focuses on the unpublished comparison between Heracles’ banquet in the fourth episode of the Alcestis and the Orestes’ one, in the second episode of Iphigenia in Tauris. For the first time, these scenes will be also juxtaposed to the Choes, the feast celebrated during the Anthesteria, in which laughter and pain coexist. The common feature between banquets and feasting is the value of xenia.
