Abstract
This essay reflects on postcolonial literature and the theme of subjectivity, looking at the ‘subjective voice’ in postcolonial cultural production as increasingly relevant in the theoretical articulation of the action of ‘speaking/writing back’. While the postcolonial partakes in a fundamental way in the shattering of the humanistic, unitary subject, it also problematizes current theoretical investigations on subjectivity, in particular in light of the current metanarrative amplification of the authorial self as (re)producible through new media and social networks. The reflection is articulated through the concept of performativity and of postcolonial subjectivity in the poetry of Palestinian-American authors Suheir Hammad and Nathalie Handal, and of Syrian-American author Mohja Kahf.
