Abstract

This chapter examines the policies, practices, procedures, and approaches developed and implemented in Italy to respond to the demand for early identification of women victims and presumed victims of trafficking. In particular, it focuses on early identification procedures and the ways in which differing interpretations of the concept of vulnerability shape these practices. At the same time, it explores the use of vulnerability assessments based on trafficking indicators, as well as the potential tensions and challenges they generate in the processes of identifying and protecting women who are victims of trafficking and severe exploitation.
