Abstract

The history of the LIS (Italian Sign Language) interpreting profession is long, structured and has evolved over time. It is closely intertwined with the story of sign language itself and the Italian Deaf community and unfolding between two worlds: that of Deaf individuals and that of hearing individuals, in a constant pursuit of balance between the two languages and cultures. The recent legislative recognition of the profession and LIS makes it possible to outline an official profile and pave the way for a new professional trajectory.
