Saltos atrás: el uso de retrocesos temporales en los reportajes periodísticos de fútbol

Abstract

This study examines how references to anterior moments are realised in newspaper reports on football in Spanish and French. Although events in this genre are typically presented chronologically, our analysis of a corpus of World and European Championship reports (2010‑18) reveals that temporal regression occurs in approximately 50% of the articles in both languages. The central research question is onomasiological: How is anterior reference realised, and which linguistic markers indicate it? We identify three types of anterior reference: temporal regression within the main narrative, regression on a discursively subordinate level, and anterior reference through nominal or non-clausal structures. We discuss the discursive and stylistic functions of these occurrences and compare the two languages. The results show that while Spanish and French exhibit similar potential for temporal regression, Spanish features more frequent anterior reference in the main storyline.
