Adopting a Philological Approach Toward Chishi

Abstract
Hachijō, a small endangered Japonic variety, is fortunate enough to have been documented since the Edo period, and to have been abundantly described and commented ever since. As a matter of fact, Hachijō linguistic material can be found in about two dozen documents from between 1746 and 1858, which provide valuable lexical, grammatical and phonological insights into early Hachijō. This article proposes a preliminary study of those sources, with a summary of the existing literature about them, and an introduction to the philological questions they raise.
