Abstract
In this introductory chapter, a number of preliminary information is given: some clarifications on the terminology used – in particular, the terms ‘apocalyptic’, ‘eschatology’ and ‘millenarianism’ – , and a review of the sources used and their chronology, in particular the Kitāb al-Fitan by Nuʿaym b. Ḥammād and the Syriac, Greek, Coptic and Armenian Christian apocalypses.
