Publication Costs for Journal Articles

Authors publishing articles in Edizioni Ca’ Foscari journals do not incur any costs. The publication of articles is free for all contributors, as the costs for the creation and distribution of digital Open Access editions are fully covered by the entities and institutions that promote and fund the journals.

Support of Journals and Applicable Fees

The journals in which these articles are published are not free, but are supported by universities or other research entities that promote them. In particular, the fees for creating the digital Open Access editions of the articles vary depending on the entity affiliated with the journal, as follows:

For journals promoted and funded by Ca’ Foscari University of Venice: the cost of creating the digital Open Access edition for each standard article (up to 25 pages of text) is €250 (+ 4% VAT).
For journals promoted and funded by other Italian, European, or non-European universities or research entities: the cost of creating the digital Open Access edition for each standard article (up to 25 pages of text) is €400 (+ 4% VAT).

Length and Additional Costs

Each standard article must meet the following characteristics:

Maximum length of 25 pages of text (1 page = 2,000 characters, including spaces).
Abstract and keywords in English.
Main text in one language (Italian, English, French, Spanish, German).
Footnotes, off-text citations, bullet and numbered lists, tables, bibliography.

If an article exceeds the standard length of 25 pages, the cost for each additional page will be as follows:

For journals promoted and funded by Ca’ Foscari University of Venice: €10 (+ 4% VAT) per additional page.
For journals promoted and funded by other Italian, European, or non-European universities or research entities: €13 (+ 4% VAT) per additional page.

Edizioni Ca’ Foscari’s Open-Access Policy

Open Access Declaration

ECF adopts the complete Open Access model, ensuring free and immediate access to all scientific publications for all users, with no embargo. Articles and books published by ECF can be read, downloaded, copied, distributed, printed, and used for any lawful purpose, with no restrictions except for proper attribution and the preservation of the integrity of the work.

Publication Licence

ECF adopts the Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY 4.0) licence for all publications, allowing anyone to read, download, copy, and reuse the content, with the obligation to attribute the authorship of the work. However, for texts containing protected resources, such as images, the author can choose more restrictive licences to protect third-party rights.

Self-Archiving Policies

ECF adopts an open self-archiving policy that encourages the dissemination of research. Authors are encouraged to archive pre-print versions (i.e. manuscripts prior to and following peer review) in public and/or institutional repositories before publication on the ECF website, with the sole exclusion of the typeset version during proofreading.

After the official publication of the article or book, ECF assigns a DOI (Digital Object Identifier) to the final digital version, ensuring its citability and permanent accessibility. Authors can also deposit the post-print version (i.e. the final typeset version) in repositories.

Publication Types

ECF supports several Open Access models for its publications:

Gold Open Access: In ECF, this OA model applies only to books, which are published entirely in Open Access, with immediate availability and no paywall.
Diamond Open Access: ECF applies this model exclusively to journals, ensuring that authors do not have to bear Article Processing Charges (APC) for publishing articles.

Copyright Management

Authors retain copyright over their works, which are transferred to ECF only for the granting of publication and distribution rights according to the terms of the chosen licence. Authors are free to archive and distribute the pre-print or post-print versions of their works, following editorial policies to ensure free and immediate access.

Archiving and Preservation

ECF is committed to ensuring the long-term preservation of published works. All content is immediately archived in secure and accessible archiving systems to ensure the permanent availability of publications over time.

Monitoring and Adherence to International Standards

ECF is committed to complying with international standards for Open Access publishing. As a member of OASPA, the publisher aligns with the ethical and professional guidelines established for Open Access publishers, including editorial transparency policies, respect for authors' rights, and free accessibility for all readers without discrimination.

Sustainability and Financial Transparency

ECF adopts a sustainable financial model that ensures free access to publications without compromising editorial quality. The publisher may cover operational costs through public funding models, sponsorships, or other forms of institutional support, without imposing costs on authors. In line with the principle of transparency, ECF provides clear information about Article Processing Charges (APC) and Book Processing Charges (BPC).

Requirements for Authors

Authors wishing to publish with ECF must comply with the following conditions:

Open Access Declaration: Authors must sign a declaration agreeing to the Creative Commons CC BY 4.0 licence to allow distribution of the content without restrictions.
Deposit in Repositories: Authors are encouraged to deposit the final versions of their works in institutional and public repositories, following editorial policies to ensure free and immediate access.
Completion of Bibliographic Information: Authors must provide all required information for publication, including metadata necessary to ensure the indexing and citability of the work.

Monitoring and Updates

ECF is committed to regularly monitoring the effectiveness of its Open Access policies and updating them in accordance with new global practices and directives. The policy will be reviewed periodically to ensure compliance with the latest international initiatives, such as Plan S and other emerging Open Access regulations.

Scientific certification

Publications by Edizioni Ca' Foscari (ECF) undergo a rigorous scientific review process to ensure a high academic quality standard. Each research article is subjected to double-blind peer review, conducted by experts external to the journal's Scientific Committee, following the sole method of:

Double-blind peer review
Evaluation where authors and reviewers do not know each other's identities. ECF requires two independent reviews for each contribution.

1. Scientific Review Methods

Research Articles: Each research article published in ECF journals is subject to double-blind peer review.
Prefaces, reviews, and similar texts: These types of texts are not subject to peer review, as they are editorial or commentary contributions, which do not fall under scientific research categories.

2. ECF Editorial Board

ECF is the University Press of Ca' Foscari University of Venice, and has established an Editorial Board composed of a coordinator and a representative from each of the University's disciplinary areas. The Editorial Board is responsible for ensuring adherence to scientific quality criteria and editorial policies.

3. Proposal of New Publications

The ECF Editorial Board oversees the adherence to editorial policies by the journals. While allowing the autonomy of each journal's Scientific Committee in selecting content, ECF monitors the proper application of editorial procedures and quality criteria.

Article proposals can be submitted via the appropriate online forms, available on the homepage of each journal. ECF welcomes both unsolicited proposals and contributions in response to periodically published call for papers.

4. Autonomy of the Scientific Direction

The Scientific Direction of each journal is autonomous in managing the review process and selecting peer reviewers, always in compliance with ECF guidelines.

5. Peer Review Platform

ECF provides the ECFPeerflow platform to manage the peer review process. Articles are uploaded anonymously, and each review is tracked and archived in the system.

6. External Reviewers

Reviewers must be external to the journal's Scientific Committee and must have an appropriate curriculum and a significant number of scientific publications. The selection of reviewers is the responsibility of the journal's Scientific Director.

7. Assignment of Articles to Reviewers

Articles are assigned to reviewers via the ECFPeerflow platform by the Scientific Director, who is responsible for ensuring that review times are adhered to.

8. Removal of Personal Information

Authors must remove all information that may lead to personal identification (such as their data in file properties) before uploading documents to the platform.

9. Outcome of the Review

Reviewers decide whether the document is:

Accepted
Rejected

If accepted with modifications, the author must submit a revised version for further evaluation. If the article is rejected, the Scientific Director may decide to submit it for further judgment.

10. Review and Acceptance Process

Once all reviewers have provided their feedback, the Scientific Director evaluates the results and decides whether the article can be accepted. Publication occurs only after all scientific and formal quality criteria have been met.

11. Archiving the Review Process

The entire review process is tracked, stored, and archived in the platform's database. Authors and reviewers can consult the archive through their respective profiles.

12. Technical Support

ECF offers continuous support for using the peer review platform via email at ecf_support@unive.it.

Applicazione della peer review

Sono soggetti a peer review:
- articoli scientifici inediti;
- saggi, contributi teorici o di ricerca;
- numeri monografici o tematici.
Non sono soggetti a peer review:
- editoriali;
- recensioni;
- interviste;
- notizie o materiali divulgativi.
Modalità e criteri
- La modalità predefinita è la double-blind peer review: autori e revisori non conoscono le reciproche identità.
- Il processo può avviarsi solo dopo la verifica preliminare da parte del comitato scientifico della rivista.
- I revisori sono selezionati tra studiosi esterni al comitato scientifico e non afferenti all’istituzione dell'autore.
- Ogni articolo viene valutato da almeno due revisori esterni.
Fasi del processo
1. L’autore carica il proprio contributo sulla piattaforma ECFPeerflow.
2. Il direttore o managing editor della rivista assegna il testo a due revisori idonei.
3. I revisori accettano o rifiutano l’incarico via email o tramite login alla piattaforma.
4. Una volta accettato l’incarico, i revisori compilano una scheda di valutazione strutturata, contenente:
  
  giudizi analitici su voci come originalità, rigore metodologico, bibliografia, chiarezza argomentativa;
  
  un giudizio complessivo tra:
  
  accettare senza modifiche;
  
  accettare con modifiche minori;
  
  richiedere una revisione sostanziale;
  
  respingere l’articolo.
  
  la possibilità di allegare un documento con osservazioni aggiuntive.
5. Le revisioni devono essere motivate, costruttive e redatte in forma chiara e rispettosa.
6. L’identità delle parti deve essere protetta: tutti i file devono essere anonimizzati.
  
  L’autore deve:
  
  rimuovere riferimenti a sé stesso o al proprio gruppo;
  
  eliminare ogni dato dai metadati dei file.
  
  I revisori, se allegano file, devono fare altrettanto.
7. La redazione esegue controlli a campione per verificare il rispetto dell’anonimato.
8. In caso di giudizi discordi, può essere richiesta una terza valutazione.
9. Il direttore della rivista ha la responsabilità finale della decisione editoriale, che può allinearsi o discostarsi dai giudizi ricevuti, motivandone sempre l’esito.
10. Le review considerate inadeguate (generiche, non motivate, non pertinenti) possono essere respinte e sostituite.
Scala qualitativa e scheda

I revisori esprimono valutazioni qualitative per ciascuna voce analitica, utilizzando una scala in cinque livelli:
- carente
- migliorabile
- media
- buona
- eccellente
Ogni giudizio può essere accompagnato da un commento.

Ruoli e responsabilità
- Il direttore della rivista e i membri del comitato di redazione:
  
  gestiscono i flussi in piattaforma;
  
  aggiornano i profili di autori e revisori;
  
  monitorano il rispetto delle tempistiche;
  
  verificano la qualità formale dei testi prima dell’invio in produzione.

Tracciabilità e archiviazione
- Tutte le attività svolte in piattaforma sono tracciate e conservate a norma di legge.

Publication times

The publication times of an article follow the periodicity of the journal, which can be quarterly, biannual, or annual. Normally, an article that receives a positive evaluation in the peer review process will be published in the first issue of the journal, unless a decision by the scientific boards delays the publication to the next issue.

N.B.: ECF offers the Publication in Progress option: an article approved in peer review and completed in the editing process can be published online immediately, ahead of the scheduled publication date of the complete issue. This approach allows for the early publication of individual articles, benefiting authors who complete the process quickly. Articles published in this way have the same status as those published in a complete issue.

Archiving

ECF carries out systematic archiving of all content published in the PHAIDRA perennial conservation archive.

ECF is the Press of Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, whose institutional archive is ARCA. Authors affiliated with Ca’ Foscari can, from the moment of publication, make the deposit of the full text in ARCA without the need for other authorisations. In parallel, ECF recommends that non-Ca’ Foscari authors make a similar deposit in the institutional archive of the universities of their affiliation.

ECF also uses the Internet Archive as an additional long-term international archive.

Indexes

Crossref and DOI

Edizioni Ca' Foscari is a member of Crossref, a non-profit organisation that manages a metadata and DOI (Digital Object Identifier) registry, enhancing global academic communication. Through Crossref, the metadata of our publications, including titles, authors, affiliations, and dates, are linked to a DOI that ensures permanent retrieval of the digital objects, even if the website changes.

In addition, Edizioni Ca' Foscari uses Crossmark, Crossref's service that allows tracking and monitoring updates and versions of publications, ensuring that readers are always informed about any significant changes or corrections.

Our commitment to Crossref makes our publications easily discoverable, citable, linkable, and evaluable, contributing to the dissemination and tracking of academic research outcomes. The metadata are distributed to numerous systems and organisations that support the visibility and use of the published works.

Thanks to our membership in Crossref, Edizioni Ca' Foscari participates in the i4oc initiative, which promotes the availability of structured and open citations. The metadata associated with our publications are freely accessible and can be reused, allowing systematic management of citations in common and machine-readable formats.

DOAJ – Directory of Open Access Journals

All Edizioni Ca' Foscari journals are indexed in DOAJ, an independent index that collects tens of thousands of peer-reviewed open access journals from around the world. DOAJ increases the visibility and impact of high-quality academic journals, promoting best editorial practices.

DOAB – Directory of Open Access Books

Edizioni Ca' Foscari also participates in DOAB, the Directory of Open Access Books, which collects a selection of open access academic books. DOAB provides an international index of peer-reviewed monographs, ensuring greater visibility and accessibility for our academic publications in book format.

ERIH PLUS – European Reference Index for the Humanities

All Edizioni Ca' Foscari journals are indexed in ERIH PLUS, the reference index for social sciences and humanities in Europe. This service increases the visibility and discoverability of published content, making bibliographic data accessible and up-to-date for researchers and institutions.

ANVUR – National Agency for the Evaluation of Universities and Research Institutes

Edizioni Ca' Foscari ensures that its journals meet the requirements for evaluation by ANVUR, the Italian agency responsible for evaluating the quality of research and scientific journals in Italy. Our publications comply with the standards required for indexing and evaluation by ANVUR, ensuring their recognition within national evaluation frameworks.

Scopus and other indices

The journals of Edizioni Ca' Foscari are structured according to the requirements set by Scopus, one of the most important bibliographic indices globally. Many of our journals are already indexed in Scopus, which serves as a significant platform for the international visibility of scientific publications.

In addition, Edizioni Ca' Foscari is committed to submitting and bringing the editorial series to Scopus, through a systematic attribution of ISSNs for each series. This process helps ensure greater diffusion and visibility even for non-periodical publications.

The journals and series are also candidates for other specialised indices, in line with the directives of the individual Scientific Boards, to ensure comprehensive and adequate coverage of various research areas.

Copyright, licences and publishing agreements

Authors publishing in the Journals and Series of Edizioni Ca’ Foscari agree to the following contractual terms:

Copyright and Creative Commons License
Authors retain ownership of the copyright to their work and guarantee its publication under a Creative Commons (CC) License. The standard license level granted is the ‘CC-BY 4.0 Attribution’, which allows others to share the work, provided that:
- the reference to the native digital version is given in full;
- a link to the assigned license is provided;
- it is indicated whether modifications have been made to the work.
ECF offers the signing of a publication contract for each journal article, each chapter in a miscellany, and each monograph. In this context, authors may individually decide to assign a more restrictive Creative Commons license to their contribution. It is important to emphasise that each unit of editorial content (article, essay, chapter in a miscellany, monograph) is subject to a specific, individual contract that governs the publication rights. However, in all cases, the copyright remains exclusively with the author.
Non-exclusive Distribution
Authors are free to enter into separate, additional agreements for the non-exclusive distribution of their work in the version published by the journal or series, provided that the conditions outlined in the previous point are adhered to.
Online Publication and Dissemination
Authors are free to – and encouraged to – publish their work online before, during, and after the publication process. This can foster productive exchanges and relationships, as well as a faster and broader dissemination of the published work.

Permissions and Indemnities

Through these forms, authors can inform us and guarantee that the images in their work are publishable as they are either already free from rights or for which the necessary permissions have been requested and obtained by the authors themselves.

To publish iconographic resources in our publications, it is necessary that one of the following conditions is met:

The images are available and free from third-party rights or released under licenses that allow free publication;
The necessary permissions have been requested and obtained from the copyright and publication rights holders (e.g., museums, archives, collections, etc.).

We ask authors to use these forms to inform us and guarantee that the images are free from rights or that the author has already obtained the necessary permissions from the relevant parties.

Privacy

The names and e-mail addresses found in the journal’s/series’ site will be used exclusively for the stated purposes of the journal/series and will not be made available for any other purpose or to any other party.

The processing of personal data will be carried out by employees and collaborators of Fondazione who act based on specific instructions regarding the purposes and methods of the processing (in compliance with Article 29 of the Regulation and Article 2-quaterdecies of Legislative Decree No. 196/2003), using computerized procedures and adopting technical and organizational measures appropriate to protect data from unauthorized or unlawful access, destruction, loss of integrity, or accidental breaches.
