Il riscatto geografico di Marco Polo
abstract
At the core of his monumental travel collection, the «Navigationi et viaggi» (1550-1559), Giovanni Battista Ramusio gave a place of honour to Marco Polo’s travels. Highlighting the spatial features of the book, the geographer strategically claimed its scientific value as an authoritative treatise on Asia and a reliable source for modern cartography. This paper aims at showing how this assertion contributed to the establishment of the myth of Marco Polo and served an ideological project of celebration of the Venetian knowledge of the Orient, which involved a complex network of competences as well as the production of a diversified set of cultural artefacts.
