Abstract

This paper reconsiders transmission issues in two Athenian epigrams commemorating historic battles against the Medes, by closely examining the evidence provided by the witnesses and reflecting on their possible original inscriptional settings. In particular, it offers an explanation for the apparently ‘incorrect’ order of the three sections of the Eion epigram (‘Simon.’ 40 FGE), suggesting that this may derive from the original three-dimensional context of its display. The paper also proposes a connection between this poem and one of the Marathon epigrams (‘Simon.’ 21 FGE), grounded in both textual parallels and shared cultural and historical significance. This connection may provide a clue to the original location of the latter – possibly the Stoa of the Herms – and may also shed light on the communicative intent behind the former.
