Treaty of Alliance Between Athens and Dionisius I of Syracuse

crossmark logo

Abstract
This Athenian decree (372/371) formalizes a defensive, non‑aggression alliance between Athens and Dionysius of Syracuse, explicitly conceived as perpetual and extending to Dionysius’ descendants. It also specifies procedures for concluding peace through the reciprocal dispatch and reception of ambassadors. On epigraphic grounds, the text further proposes a revised dating, placing the decree four to five years earlier, following A. Matthaiou (AIO) and a new restoration of the archon’s name.
