Officina di IG XIV2 – A New Fragment of a Metrical Funerary Epigram from the National Archaeological Museum of Taranto
Abstract
This article examines an unpublished fragment of an inscribed marble slab housed in the National Archaeological Museum of Taranto. Preserving only the opening portion of ten lines, the text is too incomplete for full restoration but can nonetheless be identified as a funerary epigram datable to the first century BC or first century AD, composed in elegiac distichs. The elevated poetic language suggests the commemoration of an untimely death, as hinted at by the reference to breastfeeding.
