Athenian Honorary Decree for Aristoxenos
abstract
The document is an honorary decree in favour of Aristoxenus son of Simon from Boeotia, who is made proxenos and euergetes for having helped the Athenians. The decree, despite its fragmentary and problematic nature, is an extremely interesting document since it belongs to that small yet critical group of honorary decrees stipulating a public proclamation in the theatre during a ‘preliminary ceremony’ to the dramatic festival of the Great Dionysia. The obscure reasons for the conferred honours also provide an excellent starting point for investigating the historical contingencies in which the decree was issued.
