Abstract

This paper aims at making a clinical questionnaire for pain diagnosis accessible to deaf people – that is, the McGill Pain Questionnaire, short-form. After producing a new and updated Italian translation, we focused on translating the questionnaire into Italian Sign Language (LIS). The objective was to develop an accessible, effective and operational interactive questionnaire which can benefit both deaf patients and medical staff. The new interactive LIS questionnaire enables the former to communicate their own pain fully and autonomously, while the latter are provided with an accurate report on the nature, intensity, and progression of the patient’s pain.
