Abstract

This chapter hinges on two fundamental hypotheses: a) the Galician novelistic tradition, at least since Rosalía de Castro’s El primer loco, can be considered a roman à clef; and b) in contrast to the epic model, conceived as a mythical narrative of the nation since the poetry of Eduardo Pondal, much of the modern Galician novel expresses political disenchantment. The author tests both hypotheses in the postcrisis novel Pazo de inverno by the poet and novelist Alberto Lema and in other relevant examples of the roman à clef genre by authors such as Xosé Luís Méndez Ferrín, Diego Ameixeiras, Xaquín Fernández Leiceaga, and Luís Rei Núñez.
