Abstract
This volume marks a fundamental turning point in the study of the three major Byzantine anti-heretical compilations produced during the ‘long twelfth century’, Euthymios Zigabenos’ Panoplia Dogmatica, Andronikos Kamateros’ Sacrum Armamentarium and Niketas Choniates’ Panoplia Dogmatica. The three works, which have not yet been critically edited, are presented together for the first time in a collected volume that analyses in detail their contents, the motivations and purposes of their production, the relationships to the sources used and the different methods of composition. The comparative analysis of the three panoplies, conducted here for the first time, opens up new avenues for research on the relationship between the works, the aims of the patrons and authors, and the role of these compilations in the reconstruction of Byzantine society and culture between the 12th and early 13th centuries. The volume is is enriched by the collaboration of scholars who have already made significant contributions to the study of the three works and their authors.
