De periferias y centros editoriales. Circuitos de distribución y consumo del impreso en el mundo moderno temprano

Abstract

The work adopts a bibliographic-historical perspective, tracing books from presses to readers. Emphasizing distribution routes and agents, it considers sociability networks, geography, and the physical characteristics of printed material. The transit of books unveils supply differences, urging a “polycentric history of globalization”. Conflicts, political and religious, impacted the trade, necessitating constant negotiation with local authorities, revealing strategic decisions by publishers. Covering urban and rural areas the study acknowledges various printed materials beyond books. It highlights challenges in establishing a unified Spanish-language book market due to foreign editorial competition and linguistic differences. This paper provides a comprehensive view of the book’s role as a cultural object, emphasizing its journey from production to consumption, and the intricate dynamics shaping the interconnected book market within the Spanish Monarchy.
