abstract

This introductory chapter defines the context for the five contributions included in this miscellaneous volume. Beginning with the impact that deafness may have on the development of linguistic and communication skills, this contribution highlights the need to use various language tests to adequately assess the linguistic proficiency of deaf individuals in both spoken and signed language. Moreover, it offers some strategies for linguistic intervention focused on the teaching of sign language and the use of different multimodal and multimedia tools to promote inclusion in situations in which communication through spoken language is hindered.
