Aims & Scope

The Byzantine Studies series emerges as a natural continuation of the experience gained during the 24th International Congress of Byzantine Studies. Founded in 1948, the International Association of Byzantine Studies (AIEB) coordinates the activities of national associations dedicated to Byzantine studies and organizes the International Congress of Byzantine Studies every five years, the world's largest academic event on the history and culture of the Byzantine Empire, bringing together thousands of scholars from around the world.

Following The 24th International Congress of Byzantine Studies, the opportunity arose to continue the scientific reflection initiated during the event, providing the academic community with a series for publishing significant research. The Byzantine Studies series collects and disseminates studies dedicated to central themes, figures, and texts of Byzantine civilization, characterized by the novelty and significance of the materials presented, as well as an innovative approach to the analysis of textual and iconographic documentation, making it an essential reference point for scholars in the field.

Byzantine studies explore every aspect of the Eastern Roman Empire, or Byzantine Empire, which flourished from AD 330 to 1453, with Constantinople—also known as Byzantium and today as Istanbul—at the heart of its millennia-long history. The series covers a wide range of research areas: archaeology and art history; linguistics, philology, and literature in Greek and other languages; economic, social, religious, military, and environmental history; and the history of philosophical thought and spirituality.
