abstract

This chapter presents an overview of the history of the Society of Jesus and of the European presence in Asia in the sixteenth century. It then focuses on the Jesuit models embodied by Ignatius Loyola and Francis Xavier, to contextualise Francisco Cabral’s character as described by his fellow missionaries.
