Agreements Between Athens and Carthage

crossmark logo

Abstract
The inscription preserves fragments of a decree ordering the dispatch of Athenian ships to Sicily, to the camp of the Carthaginian generals Hannibal and Himilco, likely in anticipation of the attack on Syracuse that the two were to launch at the beginning of 406 BC. However, Athens’ hopes to reassert control over eastern Sicily, following the disastrous expedition of 415, as well as the consequent treaty with Carthage soon collapsed due to the increasingly unfavorable course of the Peloponnesian War for Athens.
